SIKESTON — Before third and fourth graders at Wing Elementary in Sikeston began taking the state’s spring assessment test this week, they were treated with an assembly Friday, April 14 in their school gymnasium to motivate them to “knock out the MAP test.”

This year’s event took on a superhero-theme, according to Jessica Jordan, behavioral and achievements intervention teacher at Wing Elementary in Sikeston.

Donning superhero capes, Jordan led Wing Elementary teachers on Friday to encourage the students to do their best on the Missouri Assessment Program test, which is currently being implemented throughout the Sikeston R-6 School District.

“Last year we really focused on changing the way our students feel about the MAP Test,” Jordan said. “My goal is to remove the stress and anxiety, for both classroom teachers and students; and give them a fun transition into (MAP testing) week with the assembly. We chanted and cheered; we pledged to do our best, we got loud and silly, and we ended with a staff and student dance party.”

Thanks to several area businesses and organizations, Jordan said the school has many great prizes to raffle off to students after they complete the test later this month.

Wing students began testing Tuesday, April 18.

“Our students have the tools and knowledge to do amazing things,” Jordan said. “We see it everyday in the classrooms, in the hallways, and throughout our building, this is going to be another way we see what mountains they can move.”
