Sikeston City Council approves stop sign placement

Tuesday, April 25, 2023

SIKESTON – Sikeston City Council during its regular meeting Monday, April 24 authorized the building of a four-way stop at Cleveland and Allen Boulevard.

A stop sign will be put on the northwest corner of the intersection to control southbound traffic, and another on the southeast corner to control northbound traffic.

Also on Monday, Council heard the first reading of bill No. 6304, which calls for an examination of the city’s stormwater management program. Jay Lancaster, public works director, talked about how the audit revealed flaws in the city’s stormwater management plan.

A recent audit by the Department of Natural Resources discovered the city’s ordinance, which requires a permit when disturbing one acre or more of land, also requires a land disturbance permit for projects less than an acre if they are part of a larger common plan, development or sale. Subdivisions would be included, and permission would be free. The subject will be voted on at the May 1 meeting.

Council heard the first reading of bill No. 6305, which authorizes the placement of a stop sign at Commerce and Hennings Drives. If passed, it would provide more traffic control measures in the city.

For $570,326.17, the council awarded roadway bids to ASA Asphalt Company of Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Milling and resurfacing proposals will take place on Stephens Street, Euclid Avenue, Pine Street, Presnell Street and a Front Street alleyway between New Madrid Street and Scott Street. It also involves paving the city-owned parking lot located south of the former Collins Music building, as well as the gravel “road” along the railroad right-of-way.

Sikeston Department of Public Safety has received a $35,793.75 Regional Homeland Security Oversight Committee Grant, or RHSOC. Council approved the acquisition of a Paratech Raker system from Banner Fire Equipment using grant funds, which is intended to securely prevent outer walls from falling during a structural collapse. The system would be just the second in the region, with Cape Girardeau being the only other fire department that has the technology. Council also approved the purchase of a portable 2-ton air conditioner from Global Industrial. The equipment totals $35,793.75.

In other action on Monday by the City Council:

— Council approved the renewal of the city’s cyber insurance with Beazley for $23,625.

— Council approved the renewal of the city’s commercial property and casualty insurance with Travelers Insurance Company for $420,414.
