SIKESTON — For the past few months, the Sikeston Convention and Visitors Bureau, Veterans Park Committee and Sikeston Parks and Recreation have been working on a new project, the Sikeston Honors Banner and Light Project at Veteran Parks.

On the sidewalk next to Veterans Park, 16 vintage light posts will be installed, each with a banner honoring a local soldier.

Kathy Medley, executive vice president of the Sikeston Chamber, provided an update on the project.

“The light poles have been ordered and we expect to install them in the next two months,” Medley said. “We are currently working on the website and Sikeston Honors veterans’ application process and form.”

Medley said in early February another option was to place a QR code on each light post so that when people go through the park, they may scan the code with their mobile phone camera and learn about the veteran and history.

“We have finalized the Sikeston Honors Veterans form and are working on the website,” Medley said. “A QR code will be displayed on the post for visitors to scan with their phones, and that veteran’s military history will be displayed.”

The plan, according to Medley, is for the banners to rotate every few years, with one banner being removed and given to the family, and then having a list of additional veterans who want to be honored.

“The Sikeston Honors Veterans Banner and Light Project will be a great addition to Veteran Park,” Medley said. “The new light posts and banners will not only honor local veterans but will also provide lighting in the evening and an interpretive display for visitors to enjoy.”

Anyone with questions about the project can contact the Sikeston Regional Chamber, Parks and Recreation or the Veterans Park Committee.
