SIKESTON —  Get ready for some spooky strides at this year’s Sikeston Bootheel Counseling Services 14th Annual Goblin Gallop 5K and 1-mile fun run/walk.

This year’s event will take place Oct. 28, and Jennifer Hartlein, director of fund development and public relations at Bootheel Counseling Services in Sikeston, said the event is a rain or shine family event, with the road route beginning and ending at Bootheel Counseling Services.

There will be a T-shirt pickup on the day of the event from 7:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m., then the 5K race and 1-mile fun run/walk at 8:30 a.m. The registration fee for the 5K is $30, and the 1-mile is $15.

According to Hartlein, early registration concluded on Oct. 14, and everyone who pre-registered received a free T-shirt.

“Even though it’s passed the pre-registration deadline, we still have extra shirts to give,” Hartlein said. “The sooner a person registers, the more likely they will be able to get a T-shirt in the size that they want.”

Bootheel Counseling Services wishes as many individuals as possible to sign up, regardless of when they sign up, according to Hartlein.

“I know with a lot of 5K events, many people wait to sign up until the week of or on race day, so we do keep it open for that; we just can’t guarantee everyone a T-shirt,” Hartlein said.

This year’s event, according to Hartlein, will include awards and prizes. All top overall female and male finishers, as well as top female and male finishers in each category — 19 and under; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; and 60 and over — will receive awards. Hartlein encouraged people to wear their best Halloween costumes and said there would be prizes for the best male and female costumes.

According to Hartlein, one distinctive feature of the event this year is Cape Road Runner members from Cape Girardeau, Missouri, will handle the timing of the 5K and 1 mile.

“We do this fundraiser every year because Bootheel Counseling does a lot of different things,” Hartlein said. “We do a lot of things for our community around suicide prevention, and we have a crisis appointment that is able to use the funds that we raise from this event, so the Goblin Gallop helps us with those services.”

Anyone who wishes to register ahead of time can do so via the QR code on their Facebook page, according to Hartlein.

Those who call can also receive a link to pay for the event emailed to them, or they can pay with a check.
