Stephen "Steve" McElyea

SIKESTON — Stephen York McElyea, 72, passed away on Jan. 1, 2024, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

He was born March 31, 1951, to the late M.L. “Junior” McElyea and Margie York McElyea.

Steve had a witty personality and was loved dearly by family and friends. Steve was an avid sports fan, especially St. Louis Cardinals baseball and UK basketball. Steve graduated from Matthews, Missouri, High School and was a proud member of the Matthews basketball team that won the state championship in 1968. He was named to the Missouri all-state basketball team. Steve worked in the construction industry until he had to retire due to health reasons.

For the past year, Steve resided at The Chateau in Cape Girardeau and was an active participant in the resident council and an advocate for other patients. He was dearly loved by The Chateau staff and many of the residents.

Steve is survived by his mother, Margie Jones, Cape Girardeau; one sister, Patty (Louie) Belt of Hendersonville, Tennessee; two stepbrothers, Brad (Diana) Jones of Lohman, Missouri, and Stan (Mary) Jones of Charleston, Missouri; nieces and nephews, Teresa Belt, Munford, Tennessee; Louie (Nancy) Belt Jr. of Gallatin, Tennessee; Brittany (Jason) Roberts of Westmoreland, Tennessee; David Jones; and Sara Jones of Lohman; and beloved cousins, Kathy (Dwight) Johnson of Jackson, Missouri; Susie (Gary) Kenedy of Matthews; David York of Nashville, Tennessee; Ginger (Kent) Miller of Sikeston; Jim (Judy) Pharris of Sikeston.

Steve was preceded in death by his father, M.L. McElyea; his grandparents, Dola and Rivers York and Claude and Edna McElyea; and his stepfather, Bill Jones.

Steve will be missed by family and friends.

Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, 2024, at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston with Larry Griffin officiating.
