Arson suspected in New Madrid fire

Wednesday, March 6, 2024

NEW MADRID, Mo. — Over the last week, there have been reports of a check scam that may be impacting people locally.

At least one report was taken where someone put a check in the mail to their credit card company, only to find several days later that the check never made it to the company. After the victim saw a digital image of the check on their bank statement, it was clear that the check had been altered by someone and deposited into a personal bank account.

Subpoenas have been submitted to the suspect’s bank for all ownership information related to the account. The investigation is ongoing.

On the night of March 3, the New Madrid Fire Department was paged to a structure fire on St. Monica Street in New Madrid.

When they arrived, fire crews found flames coming out the front door and windows of the house. The metal roof caused substantial delays in extinguishing the fire and it was brought under control shortly after midnight.

After looking at the scene, police and fire officials contacted the Missouri Fire Marshal’s Office who sent an investigator. The investigator ruled the fire an arson and the investigation is ongoing.
