Fishing derby for kids set for May 11

SIKESTON — The annual Kids Fishing Derby is next weekend for those who are ready to cast their lines and reel in some fun at the Sikeston Complex.

Set for 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 11 at the Sikeston Complex lake, the event is open to all children ages 15 and under. There are three divisions: 5 and under, 6 to 10, and 11 to 15.

According to Abbi Lindsey, recreational coordinator for Sikeston Parks and Recreation, there is no charge.

“We try to keep all of our recreation events free or low cost for our community,” Lindsey said.

Lindsey said with three age divisions for judging, there will be a first, second and third place winner in each division. Free cookie coupons will also be provided by a sponsor.

Each child must bring their own fishing pole and bait. Small children must be accompanied by their parents or guardians. Small children may be assisted by an adult; otherwise, children should fish on their own because this is not an adult event.

“The fishing derby is just a fun way to showcase the recreational fishing we have at the complex,” Lindsey said. “We partner with the Missouri Department of Conservation to put on the event every year.”

According to Lindsey, the Missouri Department of Conservation will walk around during the event to show the children how to properly bait a hook, reel in their catch, cast their line and share in the joy of seeing what they’re able to catch.

“The Missouri Department of Conservation also assists with the measuring of the catches and helps distribute prizes, while also halving the cost of stocking the lake for the event,” Lindsey said. “Conservation agents Salvador Mondragon and Andrew Mothershead have been great to work with over the past few years and I look forward to this event, and working with them and their team each spring.”

Lindsey said there is no need to register for the event.

“Kids just need to be in place and ready to begin for the 9 a.m. buzzer,” Lindsey said. “Poles can not cast until the 9 a.m. alert. Anyone fishing in advance will not be included in the weighing of their catches.”

Lindsey mentioned that supplies are not provided and emphasized that each child must bring their own supplies.
