Farmers’ market reopens in Sikeston

SIKESTON — Historic Downtown Sikeston’s farmers’ market has reopened for the season.

The farmers market returned Saturday, May 4 in downtown Sikeston at Legion Park and will be open from 7 a.m. to noon, or until all items are sold out, every Saturday through October, according to Historic Downtown Sikeston Director Jason Davis.

Davis said the farmers’ market has grown steadily in recent years.

“Just over the last couple of years I know we’ve seen at least 10 to 12 new vendors,” Davis said.

According to Davis, this year most of their regulars are back.

“Our regulars from the previous year include a honey vendor, caramel corn vendor, Mr. Justice with his gemstones, jams, and jellies are just to name a few,” Davis said.

According to Davis, new vendors arrive on a regular basis, but it is difficult to predict how many new merchants will appear so early in the season.

“Some vendors wait to come out until their produce arrives,” Davis said.

Davis said the Sikeston Farmers’ Market benefits both vendors and citizens by providing fresh produce and other goods, allowing for healthier options. Davis said it also boosts local small businesses and farmers.

“The atmosphere of the farmers’ market is great,” Davis said. “Local citizens come down on Saturday morning, grab coffee from Ground-A-Bout and shop the market.”

According to Davis, the market has a family atmosphere, and it always makes him happy to see customers return when the market season starts.

Davis also expressed how much the community enjoys the farmers’ market.

“I think it brings a lot of nostalgia,” Davis said. “There is just something special about a summer Saturday at Legion Park in Historic Downtown Sikeston.”

According to Davis, the farmers’ market not only brings joy to the community but also provides excellent opportunities for vendors.

“Some of the vendors use the market to support their families and some use it for supplemental income,” Davis said. “They all work hard to provide goods for the community.”

If anyone would like to be a vendor, they can email Davis at director@downtownsikeston.org and he will send them an application.
