SIKESTON — In preparation for picking up tornado debris by the City of Sikeston, residents are urged to move debris to the curb (but not into the street) no later than Sunday, June 16.

According to city officials, debris moved to the curb later than June 16 may have to wait for a future round of curbside pickup. During this project, city contractors will not be able to pick up debris from private property due to Federal Emeregency Management Agency, or FEMA, rules. As a result, residents should get as much debris to the curb as they can, the city said in a social media post.

Debris must be separated into three different categories and will not be picked up if it is mixed; this is due to FEMA rules. The three categories are yard waste (limbs, trees, etc.); construction/demolition debris; and asphalt shingles.

“We understand that not everyone will be able to get their debris to the curb,” the city said in its post. “After this initial round of curbside pickup, we will reassess remaining needs in the community.”

The City’s Yard Waste Disposal site also remains open this week from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Friday, June 14 and will reopen Monday, June 17
