NEW MADRID, Mo. — Bridget Masterson will serve as interim superintendent of the New Madrid County R-1 School District.

The New Madrid County R-1 Board of Education selected Masterson, who currently serves as the District’s director of special services, to serve as interim for the 2024-25 school year. She replaces Dr. Sam Duncan, who is retiring.

Duncan described Masterson as an excellent choice to keep the District moving forward.

“I have worked with her for eight years. She is an exceptional leader,” he said. “I support her completely in this next step for her.”

He said the selection of Masterson for the position was unanimous by the board and supported by the District’s administrative staff.

According to Duncan, it is not uncommon for a school district to name an interim superintendent. The move allows a school board to have someone in place who knows the District well and will ensure the District continues to operate smoothly, he explained.

“The Board now has the full spectrum of options available in the fall for considering what the next leader for the District might look like, will have a wider array of applicants and have time to really look at them to make the right decision going forward,” Duncan said.

On Monday and Tuesday, Masterson was in Jefferson City meeting with officials of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Duncan described the training as an opportunity to become more familiar with District financing, transportation, upcoming legislation and other topics.
