SIKESTON —Altrusans from all over Sikeston gathered for a special meeting in May at Colton’s Steakhouse to review highlights from the district conference, award an ASTRA scholarship and to install new officers.

Altrusa International is all about service, so a service theme was chosen for the installation ceremony. President Melissa Eakins was installed along with the other members of the Board of Directors of Altrusa International of Sikeston by Barbara Britt, a childhood friend of Eakins. Other members of the Board of Directors include: Vice President Wende Pruden, Secretary Sondra Meadows, Treasurer Diane Eberhard, Directors Anne Obermark, Teresa Houchin, Teresa Wright and Gabbie Hodgekiss with the final member of the board being the Immediate Past President Carolyn Harris.

Harris received a crystal candy bowl and assorted chocolates as a thank you gift for her leadership and service as club president for the last two years.

Eakins took leadership of the club immediately following the installation ceremony.  Her term of office runs through May 31, 2025.  She said she is very excited about the club’s upcoming 45th anniversary celebration and looks forward to all the great service that will be executed in the coming year.

Altrusa International is an international volunteer service organization of business and professional leaders, dedicated to improving local communities through personal service.  Over 6,700 Altrusans worldwide are proud of their community commitment to enhance the lives of those in their local and global communities.  Through local Altrusa clubs, members unite varied talents in service to others, achieving as a group what individuals cannot do alone. Altrusa clubs develop and fund specific service projects to meet community needs, especially in the area of literacy. Altrusa is recognized nationally and internationally for the significant contributions of its members and clubs.  Providing over one million collective volunteer hours in their communities, Altrusa clubs serve in over 360 communities in 11 countries.

Inspired by Thoreau, Altrusan Mamie L. Bass put it best: “It is not enough to be good; Altrusans must be good for something.” In addition to increasing their repertoire of service across the country and world, Altrusa Clubs have launched extensive membership efforts to welcome interested citizens to join us in our campaign for change. Members are drawn from all cultures, from all age groups, and from all economic standings, with a common thread of wanting to give back.  For more information about Altrusa, like its Facebook page of Altrusa International, Inc of Sikeston, MO.
