Catherine Sikes
SIKESTON — Catherine Coughenour Sikes, age 78, of Sikeston died Saturday, June 22, 2024, at her home.
Born March 7, 1946, in Columbus, Ohio, to the late Ralph Merriam and Virginia Martindale Coughenour, she attended Parkview High School in Springfield, Missouri. She graduated in 1968 from Drury College with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi national sorority. She served as president from 1967-1968.
On Oct. 5, 1968, in Springfield, she married Stephen Weber Sikes, who survives of the home.
Mrs. Sikes taught elementary school in the Springfield Public Schools from 1968-1969 as well as the Sikeston Public Schools from 1971-1974. She then spent many years raising her family and working for the family business.
She served on the Sikeston Public Library board and was a Girl Scout troop leader from 1981-1991. She was a charter member of the Sikeston Humane Society and served as their president.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Sikeston where she served as treasurer and as a member of the vestry.
Also surviving are two daughters, Catherine (Jason) Schrumpf of Sikeston and Elizabeth (Frank) Miller of Cape Girardeau, Missouri; six grandchildren, Benjamin Sikes Schrumpf, Catherine Weber Schrumpf, James Allen Schrumpf, William Gray Miller, Bruce Dement Miller and Virginia Rose Miller.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until time of the memorial service at 11 a.m. Monday, July 1, 2024, at the First United Methodist Church in Sikeston with the Rev. Edith Bird officiating.
A private family committal service will be conducted later in Sikeston City Cemetery.
McMikle Funeral Home in Sikeston is in charge of arrangements.
