Lilbourn residents charged with drug trafficking in New Madrid County

LILBOURN, Mo. — Two Lilbourn residents are facing drug-trafficking charges following their arrests on Friday, July 5.

Denise R. Comstock, 50, and Thomas J. Phillips Jr., 54, are each charged with first degree drug trafficking, possession of a controlled substance and unlawful use of a weapon – possess weapon and a felony controlled substance. Comstock is also charged with unlawful possession of a firearm.

According to the probable cause statement by Sgt. John Dubois, who is an officer with the New Madrid Police Department who is assigned to the Southeast Missouri Task Force, just after 11 p.m. July 5, officers served a search warrant at 216 Winston Ave. in Lilbourn. Comstock and Phillips were taken into custody and read their Miranda rights.

During a search of the property, officers found 118 grams of a white crystal substance which field-tested positive for the presence of methamphetamine, a digital scale with a white crystal substance on it along with baggies used to package the substance. In addition, officers found 35 ounces of marijuana along with 30 growing marijuana plants in the back yard of the residence.

Also Phillips had approximately 40 grams of methamphetamine in his pants pockets along with $1,230. According to the probable cause statement, Phillips admitted to selling methamphetamine numerous times.

During a further search of the home, officers located a loaded 9 mm handgun and several rounds of assorted ammunition.

“Comstock admitted to purchasing the handgun and giving it to Phillips,” Dubuois wrote in the probable cause statement. He noted Comstock is a convicted felon.

During their arraignments on July 8 both entered pleas of not guilty. Associate Judge Brandon Sanchez set their return to court on July 11.

Bond is currently set at $500,000 cash only in each case. Both are currently in the Mississippi County Detention Center at Charleston, Missouri.
