Judith Queen

AURORA, Mo. — Judith Wallace Layton Queen, 83, of Aurora, formerly of French Village, Missouri, went to her heavenly home on Friday, July 12, 2024, while at Mercy Hospital in Aurora after a brief illness.

Judy was born on Sept. 11, 1940, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, to the proud parents Carl Banks Wallace and Francis Mae Johnson Wallace.

Preceding Judy in death were her parents, Carl and Francis Wallace; husband, August Queen; and sister, Jean Lowry.

Judy’s favorite thing in life was being a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. (She was known as Nanny Great for good reason.)

She is survived by her children, Linda Layton of Buffalo, Missouri; Lisa Layton (Jeff) Terry of Verona, Missouri; Laura Layton Detjen (Darren Head), Nashville, Tennessee; Lucinda Layton of San Jose, California, Robert Layton of Union, Missouri; and her very special adopted daughter, Darlene Yancy (Roger) of Evans, Georgia.

Also surviving are her grandchildren and great-grandchildren which she loved more than can be described: Keith Vines (Joni Conley) of Wright City, Missouri, Marcus Vines (Susan Voss) of Sullivan, Missouri, Danielle Detjen of Japan, Lauren and Aidan O'maoinagh of San Jose, California, and Jesse Terry of Golden City, Missouri.

Great-grandchildren are Keith Vines Jr. of Wright City, Missouri, Layton Vines, Sullivan, Missouri and a very special grand-dog, Katie.

"Miss Judy" grew up in Sikeston, where she was united in marriage to Henry (Hank) Layton. As a family, they raised their children in Farmington, MO and were owners/operators of a printing business in Ironton, Missouri.

In 1988 she married August Queen where they enjoyed several years living and entertaining at Goose Creek Lake, French Village. In 2018 she moved to Aurora where she made very special friendships with anyone that came in contact with her. Whether plumbers, electricians, heat/air contractors or neighbors....they would always stop to ask about "Miss Judy,” which was generally followed by a funny story to be told.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 22 at the IOOF Cemetery in Charleston, Missouri, under the direction of Ponder Funeral Home of Sikeston.
