SIKESTON — Dog owners who frequent Sikeston’s dog park may have noticed the installation of new signs.

According to Sikeston Public Works Director Jay Lancaster, the signs at “Vision Sikeston Paw Park” located within the Sikeston Recreation Complex were faded so he wanted new signs made with the same designs. The dog park’s rules and regulations signs have also been remade.

“I contacted Joel Kinder and asked if he had the original signs from when they were done,” Lancaster said. “So, he made a new set. We just had the old signs remade.”

Kinder Signs and Design Co. in Sikeston made the new signs to exactly mirror the original ones which say: “Vision Sikeston Paw Park.”

“Basically, we just wanted to do some cleaning up and have fresh, new signs because the existing ones had faded,” Lancaster said. “So Vision Sikeston isn’t anything new; it’s the same exact sign as the old one where the ‘Vision Sikeston’ had faded.”

Lancaster said the new signs have prompted citizens to ask what “Vision Sikeston” on the Paw Park signs means.

According to Lancaster, Vision Sikeston, which is now Leadership Sikeston, is a program created by the Sikeston Regional Chamber that aims to provide community members with the tools, experience and networks they need to become future leaders.

“Before it was Leadership Sikeston, it was Vision Sikeston,” Lancaster said. “And the dog park was one of Vision Sikeston’s projects for 2016.”

On July 25, 2017, the Vision Sikeston Paw Park, which is located at the Sikeston Recreation Complex south of the soccer fields, officially opened to the public.

The project was finished with $16,000 in private donations.

“Every year they have a project that they do in town, and that year, bringing the dog park was one of their projects,” Lancaster said.

Lancaster said the city is not rebranding the dog park, but because the dog park originated from Vision Sikeston, he wanted to keep “Vision Sikeston” in the park’s name.

Paw Park has been at the Sikeston complex for seven years now. The dog park is divided into fenced sections for large and small dogs, each with a water spigot and picnic tables.

The rules and regulations for using the Paw Park are posted at the entrance with the newly installed signs.

Owners are reminded that they are legally responsible for their animals, and any injuries caused by them. Dogs are required to be licensed, healthy and have current vaccinations.  Dogs are required to wear a collar and ID tags at all times.

Unruly or aggressive dogs, or dogs in heat, are not allowed in the park and will be removed from the park. Dogs using the park should be at least 4 months old.

Owners are required to be in the park to supervise their dogs and have a leash available. Owners are required to leash dogs while entering the park and leaving the park.
