BENTON, Mo. — Scott County R-4 “Kelly” School District recently completed its bond issue construction.

In April 2022, taxpayers in the Kelly district approved a $6.5M bond issue for capital projects. The district completed all of the improvements as promised at the end of April, according to Superintendent Dr. Bradley Kolwyck.

“The 2024-2025 school year is the first year for everyone to enjoy all of the new buildings and safety enhancements,” Kolwyck said. “The major improvements in ‘Proposition Kelly Schools 2022’ were the security of the vestibule and remodel in the middle school as well as the 11,000-square feet addition to the high school.”

Kolwyck said in addition to those projects, the district had already replaced many HVAC units in the school, installed new bleachers in the high school gym and baseball and softball field lights, and it fixed building structural problems.

“The middle school security vestibule was the final phase to creating a two-tier entry system at all of the main entrances for the buildings,” said Kolwyck. “All of the projects were needed and provide an exceptional learning experience for all students.”

At the high school, the new 11,000 square foot addition was added and Kelly Head Football Coach Lance Powers said he’s excited to have the new addition.

Powers explained the new weight room has given the athletic programs more opportunities.

“The weight room has allowed us this summer to lift our entire team at one time instead of a rotational program, which also has allowed us more time to get in the classroom and film work during a workout day,” Powers said. “I feel it has benefited all of our programs tremendously. We have had more sports utilize the weight room over the summer since I have been here.”

Athletic Director Melanie Heuring agreed.

“The weight room has been a wonderful and beneficial addition for our school and sports programs,” Heuring said. “It was something that was long overdue for our school, and I know the students and coaches appreciate it and take pride in it.”

Heuring said the new weight room will help the school’s athletic programs tremendously and they appreciate everyone who helped make it possible for the school.

Since Kolwyck started his tenure three years ago, the district has been focused on facility and safety improvements, he said.

In addition to the bond projects, the district has installed door alarms, security window tinting, alerting systems and more with the use of state and federal grants.
