Filing period for Sikeston City Council seats starts Oct. 8

SIKESTON — The filing period for the April 8, 2025, City Council election will begin Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 8 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29.

Any person desiring to become a candidate for Council shall file with City Clerk Rhonda Council at City Hall during the filing period.

Terms expiring in 2025 are John Leible, at-large; Tom Robison, Ward 1; and Onethia Williams, Ward 4. Leible and Robison are eligible to seek a second term while Williams is serving her second term and is ineligible to run.

If more than two candidates file for a particular seat, there will be a primary election on Feb. 4, 2025. If not, general election day will be April 8, 2025.

To be eligible to run for City Council, all candidates must be a qualified voter of Sikeston and be at least 21 years of age. Ward candidates must be a resident of the ward for which they are filing for a period of at least one year immediately prior to the last day to file for election. At-large candidates must have been a resident of the city for at least one year immediately prior to their election.

Individuals interested in filing for a council position must complete a declaration-of-candidacy form, a candidate’s affidavit of tax payments and bonding requirements and pay a $15-filing fee.
