STARKVILLE, Miss.—Ethan Moore, a Mississippi State University junior agronomy major from Matthews, Missouri, is the recipient of the prestigious Justin R. Hunter Memorial Scholarship for fall 2024.

This scholarship, established in memory of Justin Riley Hunter, is awarded to students from New Madrid County, Missouri, who share Hunter’s deep passion for agriculture, the Mississippi River and the outdoors.

Hunter was a proud MSU alumnus known for his dedication to his family, love for the land and passion for hunting. He was an exceptional figure in his personal and professional life, balancing a successful career in Washington, D.C., with his enduring commitment to his roots in New Madrid.

Hunter, 54, unexpectedly passed away Sept. 16, 2023. He is survived by his wife Caroline; daughters, Helena and Vivian; his parents, Furg and Sarah Hunter; sisters, Holly and Sarah Beth; and countless aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Moore, a fifth-generation farmer and student in MSU’s Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, embodies the very qualities that defined the scholarship’s namesake. Like Hunter, Moore was raised in a close-knit community and developed a profound connection to agriculture at a young age. Both men developed a deep connection with the land and the rhythms of rural life—fostering a shared love for waterfowl, the Mississippi River and the outdoors.

“Receiving this scholarship is an incredible honor, and I’m deeply grateful for the support it provides, not just for me, but for students like me from New Madrid County,” Moore said.

After graduation, Moore plans to become a crop scout or chemical representative for an agricultural company. His connection to the land, enthusiasm for agriculture and deep ties to his hometown community make him a fitting recipient of this scholarship.

The Justin R. Hunter Memorial Scholarship honors the memory of a beloved alumnus and empowers the next generation of agricultural leaders. MSU is committed to continuing Hunter’s legacy by supporting students like Moore, who will carry forward the traditions and values that Hunter held dear.
