NEW MADRID, Mo. —The New Madrid City Council has slated nearly $500,000 for street paving.

At their Sept. 28 meeting, the Council accepted a bid from Asa Asphalt of Cape Girardeau for a series of street improvements. The winning bid totaled $474,291.41.

Streets to be paved are: Pinnell Street from Main Street to Brush Prairie, Mitchell Street from Riley to Pinnell streets, Bloomfield Road from Highway 61 to the city’s water plant and Kingshighway from Pinnell Street to Highway U. Also parts of Brush Prairie, Missouri Street, Digges Street, St. Teresa Street and Riley Street will be paved.

According to City Administrator Aaron Griffin, several smaller fixes are also part of the bid package.

Depending on the weather, work could begin this week.

Also during the meeting, approval was given for the sale of one of the city’s police vehicles to the New Madrid County R-1 School District for use by a school resource officer. Also the Council agreed to trade-in three current police vehicles to Martindale Chevrolet.

Those four vehicles are being replaced with the purchase of two Chevrolet Silverado trucks. With the trade-ins, one of the trucks will cost the city $32,000 and the other $24,000.

In his report to the Council, Griffin updated them about the nine-hole frisbee golf course to be installed at Hunter-Dawson Park on Highway U.

“We are excited about that. This is the first step in trying to update our parks by offering something new that all ages can play,” Griffin said.

Griffin also spoke about his meeting with officials from the State Emergency Management Agency. The city is seeking to recoup some of its costs from the clean-up of the May wind storm, which was declared a natural disaster.

Also Griffin discussed the Missouri Municipal League meeting he attended with City Clerk Paige Keene.

“We learned a lot that we believe we can implement here,” he said.
