MATTHEWS, Mo. — Michael “Mudd” Wayne Pyles, a beloved husband, father and friend, was born on Aug. 28, 1953, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, to the late Mary Lee Morefield Pyles. He passed away peacefully at his home in Matthews on Sept. 29, 2024, at the age of 71.

Mudd was a man who wore his heart on his sleeve, best known for his warm, welcoming hugs that could brighten anyone’s day. His love for the St. Louis Cardinals was legendary, and he cherished countless game days filled with excitement and camaraderie. Mudd's incredible ability to connect with others and say just the right thing in any situation made him a true friend and confidant to many.

As a cancer survivor, Mudd exemplified strength and resilience, inspiring those around him with his unwavering spirit. He was the backbone of his family, always providing support and guidance through life’s challenges, showing them the power of love and determination.

Mudd found his greatest joy in his marriage to Deborah Brown, whom he wed on June 16, 1977, in Dexter, Missouri. Their love was a grand adventure, characterized by an unrivaled adoration for one another. Mudd took great joy in anticipating Debbie's needs and celebrating her passions as if they were his own. Together, they built a life filled with love and laughter. Their bond was a beautiful testament to a partnership where both hearts thrived, and their love story will forever be cherished.

A devoted member of the Baptist faith, Mudd was also active in the Big Prairie Jaycees and served as the past city administrator for the City of Matthews. His commitment to the community was evident through his involvement in numerous charity events and benefit dinners, where he passionately supported those in need.

He was preceded in death by his mother in 2012 as well as his brother, Johnny Pyles, in 2014.

Mudd leaves behind a legacy of love, remembered fondly by his wife, Debbie Pyles; his son, Ben (Amelia) Pyles; his daughter, Jennifer (Ronnie) Byassee; his sister, Paulette Pyles; and his adored grandchildren: Lyla Pyles, Gerrit Pyles, Sydnee Graham, John Michael Graham, Hannah Byassee and Bellah Byassee. He was also the proud great-grandfather of Ivee Blumenberg, and his beloved fur baby, Bailey, will miss his gentle presence. Mudd is survived by a host of relatives and countless friends who will carry his memory in their hearts.

Mudd’s spirit and kindness will be profoundly missed, but his love and warmth will remain with us forever

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3 at DeLisle Funeral Home in Portageville, Missouri, where services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4 with the Rev. Lucus Polk officiating.

Burial will be in the Matthews Cemetery.
