Four file for candidacy of Sikeston City Council in opening days of filing period

SIKESTON — Four candidates have filed for the three open Sikeston City Council positions during the first days of the filing period which began Tuesday, Oct. 8.

Tom Robison filed for re-election in Ward 1 while Matt Drake filed for the at-large position currently held by John Leible. Onethia Williams in Ward 4 is serving her second term and is ineligible to run. Filing for Ward 4 was Lorenzo Ware and Tearle “Cowboy” Johnson.

The filing period will end at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29.

If more than two candidates file for a particular seat, there will be a primary election on Feb. 4, 2025. If not, General Election Day will be April 8, 2025.

To be eligible to run for City Council, all candidates must be a qualified voter of Sikeston and be at least 21 years of age. Ward candidates must be a resident of the ward for which they are filing for a period of at least one year immediately prior to the last day to file for election. At-large candidates must have been a resident of the City for at least one (1) year immediately prior to their election.

Individuals interested in filing for a Council position must complete a Declaration of Candidacy Form, a Candidate's Affidavit of Tax Payments and Bonding Requirements and pay a $15 filing fee.
