Kewanee man faces child pornography charges
NEW MADRID, Mo. — A New Madrid County man is in custody on charges of child pornography.
Arraignment for David J. Smith, 46, of Kewanee, Missouri, is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 17 on five counts of possession of child pornography, first offense.
According to the online probable cause statement by Deputy Jackie Hays, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children contacted the New Madrid County Sheriff’s Department about an email account downloading images of children. The report indicated 62 uploaded files of possible child pornography.
After obtaining a warrant, officers went to a Kewanee residence where they spoke with Smith.
Smith told the officers he had accidentally downloaded an image to his phone. After officers seized his phone and tablet, Smith stated he had opened files containing child pornography, estimating it was less than 100 files but more than 10.
Currently Smith is being held in the Mississippi County Jail in lieu of $100,000 cash only bond.
