CHARLESTON, Mo. — Elizabeth Hinds Clevenger, 76, of Charleston died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2024, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

Born Jan. 8, 1948, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, to the late Urban Brownlee and Hazel Ellen Lupton Brownlee, Elizabeth was a graduate of Van Buren High Schools, Van Buren, Arkansas, and went on to receive her Bachelor of Arts degree in Vocal Music from the University of Arkansas at Clarksville, Arkansas. Elizabeth was a professional contralto vocalist, often performing as a guest soloist for various works such as Handel’s Messiah for various community and university choirs. She was also an accomplished pianist and organist. A member of the First Presbyterian Church in Van Buren, Elizabeth attended the United Methodist Church in Charleston.

In 1976, she moved to Charleston and taught elementary music, first in Sikeston, Missouri, and then in Charleston until her she retired in 2002. In 1984, she opened the Merle Norman Studio in Charleston, which she operated until 1998. Elizabeth later lived both in Bonita Springs, Florida, and maintained her home in Charleston while she was employed as a bookkeeper for Farmer Mike’s LLC, retiring in 2011.

On Jan. 8, 1972, she married Raymond D. Hinds who preceded her in death June 21, 1990. On April 16, 1992, she married James A. Clevenger, who preceded her in death on Nov. 26, 2001.

Survivors include several cousins and close friends.

Friends may assemble for a graveside service at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery near Charleston, Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024, at 10:30 a.m.

Interment will follow under the direction of the McMikle Funeral Home of Charleston.
