Sikeston man charged with disarming officer
SIKESTON — A Sikeston man is facing charges after taking a taser from a Department of Public Safety officer while in custody.
Gregory Kyle Deuster is charged with disarming a peace officer or correctional officer while performing official duty and resisting arrest. He is currently being held on a $100,000 cash only bond. Just after 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9., Sikeston DPS officers responded to a business in the 900 block of Kingshighway following a report of an accident on private property. As officers arrived, they observed the striking vehicle attempting to leave the parking lot, however officers activated their emergency equipment, and the driver, later identified as Gregory Duester, stopped the vehicle.
Public Safety Officer Phayzun Fobbs wrote in the probable cause statement that while he was speaking to the victim another officer was assisting Duester, who put his vehicle in drive and fled from the scene. Duester then failed to stop at approximately three stop signs before arriving at his residence.
According to Fobbs, Duester was told to exit his vehicle but refused.
“After requesting Mr. Duester to open his door several times, an additional officer proceeded to break the passenger side glass window in an attempt to gain access to the vehicle and to assist Mr. Duester out of the vehicle,” Fobbs wrote.
Duester continued to resist officers and was administered a drive stun, Fobbs reported. Eventually officers placed Duester under arrest and took him to DPS Headquarter for booking.
In the probable cause statement, Fobbs stated Duester continued to resist officers.
“While directing Mr. Duester to the dressing room to change clothes, Mr. Duester pushed away from an officer before using his right leg to kick an officer,” Fobbs wrote. “Mr. Duester was assisted to the ground and placed in handcuffs as he was escorted to a cell.”
Duester was taken to Missouri Delta Medical Center to be evaluated for injuries he had received. After being released, he was returned to DPS headquarters where he continued to refuse officers’ request.
Fobbs reported officers again assisted Duester to the ground where an officer administered a drive stun.
“While on the ground, Mr. Duester unarmed an officer during a five second taser cycle as he gained control of the taser resulting in a drive stun to another officer,” Fobbs wrote.
Duester is scheduled to be arraigned in Division II of New Madrid County Circuit Court before Associate Judge Brandon M. Sanchez at 10 a.m. Thursday.
