Deadline to enter Sikeston’s Annual Mayor Holiday Spirit Award is Dec. 9
SIKESTON — Sikeston’s Annual Mayor Holiday Spirit Award is back again for its fourth year and asking citizens who decorated their homes or yards for the Christmas season to enter the contest.
Sikeston Mayor Greg Turnbow is looking forward to another year of seeing Sikeston citizens’ homes all decked out for the holidays.
According to Turnbow, Sikeston residents who decorate their homes can earn recognition by winning the award.
“This is just another way to get people involved in the city of Sikeston,” Turnbow said. “It’s a really fun way to show pride in your hometown and in your house.”
According to Turnbow, those who wish to nominate a home must send an email to sikestonmayor@sikeston.org with the subject “Holiday Spirit Award” along with the address of the home.
Turnbow said the award is given to the best decorated house or yard in Sikeston for the Christmas holiday and the winner will be selected by Turnbow himself and the Sikeston City Council members.
Turnbow said once all the pictures have been submitted, their pictures are printed, and he and the council look at each picture.
“We first look at the whole group of pictures, then we narrow it down to the ones we think are the best, and once we get down to those last few, everybody makes their choice on which one to pick,” Turnbow said.
According to Turnbow, when it comes down to the last few houses, he likes to see the house or yard in person.
“When we get down to the final round, typically I like to go look at the houses to help me make my decision,” Turnbow said.
The deadline to enter is 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, and Turnbow said the winners will be picked sometime before Dec. 25.
After the winner is picked, Turnbow said he will go to the winner’s home and congratulate them and give them their glass trophy.
Turnbow also noted the winners must be willing to have their name, address and picture of their home to share on the “City of Sikeston” Facebook page.
