SIKESTON — A Sikeston man faces charges for illegally discharging a firearm in city limits early New Year’s Day.

Antowon Maurice Davis Jr., 28, is charged through Scott County with felony unlawful possession of a firearm; felony unlawful use of a weapon; and misdemeanor unlawful discharge of a firearm-first offense, according to online court records.

According to the probable cause statement by Sgt. Jerence Dial with Sikeston Department of Public Safety, at 12:04 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025, he was responding to a burglary call located in the 800 block of West Wakefield in Sikeston. As he turned off North West Street to travel west on Wakefield, he heard gunshots coming from the north side of the roadway. Dial said he looked to the north and saw a man standing at the northeast corner of the residence, with one arm extended into the air, discharging rounds from a firearm.

As Dial turned into the driveway, the male ran inside the house, the probable cause said. Dial said he was able to contact the man, who was identified as Davis. Once detained, Davis said he did not know he could not shoot firearms off in the city. Dial asked Davis where his gun was located, and Davis said it was on the couch. A 9 mm handgun was located on the couch, according to the probable cause. Dial noted Davis is a convicted felon.

Davis was taken into custody. Bond was set at $60,000 cash or surety. He is scheduled to appear in court at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3.
