Follow God by living generously

Friday, September 22, 2023

My sister and I were recently at My Daddy’s Cheesecake in order to plan a bridal shower. It was fun picking out the sandwiches and especially the desserts. What stumped us was how much of each item to order. We were raised by a mother, grandmothers and aunts who all lived by the same mantra: “It is better to have too much than too little.” After ordering, I made a comment to my sister that we should have containers in our cars just in case there are leftovers. I am confident we will have leftovers. We always do.

As you can tell, I was raised to be generous toward other people. I think a generous nature reflects a welcoming, hospitable attitude. Even during times when there was just enough food on the table for family, a place at the table was always made for unexpected visitors who showed up at mealtime. No one would be turned away. It was important that stomachs and relationships were fed.

When we live in a place of abundance rather than scarcity, we enrich the lives of other people. In turn, we enrich our own lives with wonderful memories and friendships. When we live in a place of abundance, we are reflecting the very nature of God. God abundantly loves us, generously saves us and lavishly pours out grace after grace upon us. Let us follow God by living generous lives.

“Generous persons will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.” — Proverbs 11:25
