SIKESTON -- The hardships of playing in excessive heat for five straight days on top of driving over 800 miles to get to the Sikeston Sports Complex turned out to be all worth the trip for Lamar, Colo. After going 2-2 in pool play and then beating Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada and Paola, Kan., the 11-year olds from Lamar wound up winning the 2011 Cal Ripken 11U Midwest Plains Regional baseball tournament by defeating the Mineral Area National All-Stars, 5-4 on Thursday...

A truck sits against a traffic sign post at Main and Malone after a two-car accident on Thursday afternoon. The accident was reported to the Sikeston Department of Public Safety at 5:25 p.m. Full details were not available as of press time, but apparently the accident occurred when a rescue squad personnel vehicle was traveling through the intersection en route to responding to another accident, using lights and sirens as directed, and was struck by another vehicle, which apparently did not see and hear the warnings. ...
