Traffic picking up on local roads

Tuesday, September 21, 2021

NEW MADRID, Mo. - Since school has started back and corn harvest is starting, traffic on local roads has picked up, especially in the mornings.

On Sept. 15, officers responded to the south New Madrid overpass where a car was struck by a grain truck. The driver of the car initially got off the interstate, then attempted to cross Highway 61 to get back on the interstate. A grain truck traveling south on Highway 61 struck the back of the car and spun it around in the roadway.

Luckily there were no injuries, but the car had to be towed from the scene.

On the night of Sept. 18, the police and fire departments responded to an accident on Highway 61 in front of Dollar General when a truck on Highway 61 hit an SUV that was pulling onto the roadway.

Fire personnel used rescue tools to free the driver of the SUV and he was transported by ambulance after being removed from the car. The driver of the truck was also hurt and was transported by a second ambulance.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
