Four children injured in vehicle crash

Wednesday, February 28, 2024

NEW MADRID, Mo. - In the late evening hours of Feb. 24, the New Madrid Fire Department was paged to a two-vehicle traffic crash on Highway 61 just north of the New Madrid city limits.

The crash occurred when a vehicle that was slowing to make a turn into Evergreen Cemetery was struck in the rear by the car behind it. Four juveniles in the car were injured with one of the children who had serious injuries and was flown to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis.

The roadway was blocked for a significant amount of time while patients were removed from the vehicles and debris was cleared from the roadway.

During the service of a search warrant in Charleston last week related to vehicle break-ins in New Madrid, two guns were seized that had not been reported stolen as of that time.

Sikeston DPS detectives traced the ownership of the guns and found that one had originally been purchased by a man in New Madrid. Officers made contact with him over the weekend and he confirmed the gun had been stolen without his knowledge. In addition, he found two other guns and two handgun magazines were missing.

The investigation is on going and more charges are expected.
