NEW MADRID, Mo. - In the early morning hours of Oct. 25, a strong storm system pushed through New Madrid, damaging two homes and several utility poles.

At around 1:30 a.m., dispatch received a call that the roof had been lifted from a house on Main Street and debris from the roof had damaged a house next door. Officers responded to the scene. Luckily everyone made it out of both houses with no injuries.

In addition, there was minor damage to utility poles along Highway 61 west of the police station, but the power outage only lasted a short time.

Work was under way Monday afternoon to restore power to a house located at the corner of Vandenvender and Main Street in New Madrid. The power was knocked out and the home was damaged when strong winds blew through during a storm early Monday morning.

There were no tornados detected in the area and the damage appeared to be the result of strong straight-line winds.

The tornado sirens maintained by individual cities in the county are activated remotely from dispatch any time there is a tornado warning. In addition, the sirens can be set off by fire personnel in each city at their discretion, either by contacting dispatch or by manually activating the siren at the pole.

In the storm that came through on Oct. 25, no sirens were activated because a tornado was neither seen or indicated by radar.
