One jailed for firing shots at car
NEW MADRID, Mo. - At around 11:30 p.m. Aug. 29 officers were called to the 400 block of Vandenvender in reference to a possible shooting.
When officers arrived, they found someone had fired several shots into a parked car and then fled the scene on foot. The owner of the vehicle had a verbal argument with a man earlier in the night, and it was believed that he was the suspect.
From surveillance footage in the area, it was clear that the suspect had driven down the victim’s street several times before the shooting. Also, the next day officers following up on the crime found a baseball cap behind the victim’s house believed to have been dropped by the suspect when he fled.
A warrant was issued for the man’s arrest and he was picked up later in the day on Aug.30. in Caruthersville. The man is currently out on bond for unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
On the night of Sept. 3, officers responded to Cottonwood Park on the other side of the Observation Deck for a possible arson.
When they arrived, they found that a man and woman were staying together in a tent on the riverbank. After an argument about money, the man began kicking embers from the campfire onto the tent, catching it on fire with the woman inside; the woman escaped without injury and the fire was extinguished.
The man was placed under arrest for several felony charges including arson and assault.
