Police assist in stop
NEW MADRID, Mo. - In the early morning hours of June 27, the New Madrid Fire Department was paged for mutual aid at an apartment fire in Howardville.
New Madrid and Lilbourn Fire Departments responded and made entry into one of the apartments that was filled with smoke. They found that the fire was caused by wiring inside a wall and after a few hours the fire was fully extinguished.
The apartment building sustained serious smoke damage and had to be evacuated for the night.
On the afternoon of July 1, New Madrid County Dispatch issued a broadcast to all officers in the county that Sikeston DPS was in pursuit of a white Ford Fusion traveling south on US Highway 61 toward New Madrid. The pursuit then moved over to Interstate 55 southbound and continued south, where a New Madrid officer set up on the interstate was able to deploy a spike strip.
The suspect vehicle hit the spikes and less than a mile later started losing a tire. The vehicle came to rest near the north New Madrid overpass and the driver was taken into custody by Sikeston DPS officers. There were several active warrants for the driver’s arrest and he was also charged with resisting arrest.
