Listen to the gentle promptings of the Spirit

Friday, July 28, 2023

Recently, a friend of mine phoned me. I had not spoken to her for over a year, so that call was a bit of a surprise. She said that she was walking to her car at the grocery store and noticed a rubber ducky on the dashboard of a car and immediately thought of me. It was so wonderful to catch up with her. That phone call made my day a very happy day.

Do you ever see something that makes you think of a particular person? Or, are there times you are busy with your day and a certain person you haven’t really thought about in a long time pops into your head? The latter happens to me all of the time. And I do not attribute that to just something random that happens. To me, these are the promptings of the Holy Spirit. You may argue that when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, that something big is the result. Like how the Spirit led Moses to free his people, or Joshua to lead a nation. The Spirit led Gideon to lead an army and Samson to ultimately destroy the enemy. The Spirit led Paul on his missions to the Gentiles and allowed Mary to give birth to the Savior. The Spirit does significant things in the lives of people.

Yet, from experience I have learned that these gentle reminders of certain people are significant as well. Whenever someone’s face or name pops into my mind out of the blue, I always pause to say a quick prayer for that person. In addition to this, I may phone or text that person and ask how things are with them. I cannot tell you how often the response is that the person had something distressing going on in their life and that they needed someone to pray for them or a loved one. The urgings of the Spirit and the prayers said on behalf of others are significant. An entire nation or the entire world may not be impacted, but the difference you can make through your prayers and actions in the life of another person is significant. Listen to those gentle promptings of the Spirit. Someone needs you.

“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.”  Romans 8:14
