SIKESTON -- Students at Lee Hunter Elementary were the first on Wednesday to sample the new mini salad bars which will be used at all of the elementary by the school year's end. CHARLESTON -- A Wyatt woman was seriously injured in a Wednesday afternoon accident in Mississippi County. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports the accident occurred around 3:35 p.m. on Route D, five miles southeast of Charleston, when the westbound vehicle driven by Kristen N. Haines, 19, of Wyatt, ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a culvert...

CHARLESTON -- No one can pinpoint what it is, but there's something about the Charleston Kiwanis Club Annual Talent Show that makes it a hit. And organizers expect the 45th performance, set for Friday, to be no different. "From what I can deduce from talking to talent coaches from around the area and dance studios, they apparently really like this show, and the young performers do, too," said Brett Matthews, chairman of the show. "They say it's been very well-run, and they like the venue."...

Betty Hearnes places her hand on the casket of her husband, former Gov. Warren Hearnes before the start of a public viewing in the Missouri Capitol Rotunda Wednesday in Jefferson City. Hearnes, who from 1965 to 1973 was the first Missouri governor to serve two full consecutive terms in office, died late Sunday night at the age of 86 at his home in Charleston...
