Support your local teachers

Friday, August 26, 2022

Who was the teacher that you remember the most in elementary school?

Who was your favorite high school teacher?

Everyone remembers those special teachers that changed their life. Recently, I have been reflecting on all the special teachers I had at Howard County R-2 in Glasgow, Missouri.

I asked one of our teachers in our church to text me some ways we can support them that are not obvious. She shared that glue sticks are needed as they go through a ton of them. Also, she said that teachers spend 100% of their resources for their students and can always use more.

If you want to donate anything to a school just stop by, ring the bell, and they will be glad to receive them. She also shared that it is powerful to adopt one teacher and really support him or her.

I want to give you seven other ideas I have learned as a parent and pastor in the community.

First, assume the best and don’t attack the teacher. One of the worst lessons a child can learn is when their parent does not respect their teacher in front of them. It is OK to disagree but do it privately.

Second, don’t go above the teacher’s head with an issue. It is tempting to just bypass them and talk to the principle or superintendent when an issue arises. This is rude and you would not want someone to do this. Show the teacher the respect and courtesy to talk to them first.

Third realize the teacher has more than just your kid. This means to show respect and sensitivity and be willing to wait for a time when they can get back with you (which they will).

Fourth, avoid yelling, and be positive. This means talk to them in a calm way (see point one).

Five, if you do have to go to the principal, make sure and be polite and realize that the teacher is trying.

Sixth, as parents you should be proactive in learning how to support your teacher and get involved in your child’s education.

The final point is feed them. The teacher said multiple times that donuts make great snack food (for the teachers).

Have a great year and remember to support your teacher!
