Don't be a leech
Thursday, October 6, 2022
The last two weeks, I have shared a lot about fishing. I actually have one more fishing story.
While my daughter was fishing she caught a fish. When she went to bring it in the line got hooked on some brush by the bank. Since this was the first fish she had ever caught, she looked so upset.
I swung into my Super Daddy mode and jumped in the water. I walked through the mud and unhooked the line so she could see her fish.
As I was walking I was praying the mid-missouri pond walkers’ prayer, “Please don’t let me get bit by a snake.”
As I climbed out she was so happy and thanked me. At that moment I had thoughts of dad of the year and how this is one great moment in the history of fathers.
As I was loving my dad moment, it was as if God said, “I would not get too cocky.” To bring this point home, as I was rejoicing, I felt something on my stomach.
As I was looking, I thought to myself, “You know there might have been something other than snakes to be scared of.”
Well the good news was that my stomach did not have fang marks. On the other hand on my belly button was a leech (can we write gross).
I learned something that day that I had always heard in movies... leeches really don’t pull off from a body. Eventually I got that monster off me and prayed I did not get some leech sickness.
Did you know that there is a verse that mentions leeches in the Bible? “The leech has two daughters— Give and Give!
There are three things that are never satisfied, Four never say, ‘Enough!’ (Proverbs 3:15)
What that describes is people who are never satisfied are like a leech who is always wanting. It is an affirmation for all of us to not be a leech.
Three qualities that will keep you from being a leech is thankfulness and contentment.
Lastly, fight the urge to find fulfillment to earthly things.
One last point to remember not being a leech, but avoiding them. That is, don’t blindly go in a muddy pond in mid-Missouri.
