The day grandma got violent

Friday, September 16, 2022

My grandma was the typical famer’s wife in the sense of keeping a perfect house, being a great cook and being an incredible person in general.

Although she seldom got angry, there was one day where I saw her get violent and it would be at a summer fishing trip to the pond.

As we were walking on the far side of the pond, my grandma stopped and saw something — a snake. Suddenly my grandma went into ninja-granny mode and got into a combat stance.

As a skilled samurai reaching for his sword, she grabbed the garden hoe. At that moment with the spirit of a granny barbarian she lethally swung the hoe. With the precision of David decapitating Goliath, she separated the snake from its head.

As soon as justice was carried out, she continued to lead me to the fishing spot as if nothing happened.

I often think of that day when I read the first prophecy in the Bible.

Genesis 3:15: “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”

The word bruise in the original language carries with it a mortal wound. God told Eve that a descendant would be hurt by the snake, but he would crush the head of the serpent.

This first prophecy was fulfilled many years later when Jesus died on the cross.

Colossians 2:15 describes the victory, “And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.”

Jesus was completely triumphant over the Devil. Although he is defeated, he still has power over the lost and to deceive the saved.

Further, one day his time will be complete when Jesus returns a second time.

“And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,” (Revelation 20:2)

Remember if you are born again you need to not listen to Satan and should follow Jesus. It is so encouraging to know that Jesus is the victor. It is also encouraging to know that on the Vroman’s farm the greatest fear of all black snakes is a grandma with a hoe.
