Learning from the love of the Cardinals
What team has 11 World Series Championships (second only to the hated Yankies)? Which team is regarded as Baseball City?
Fox Sports writer Dieter Kurtenbach, “St. Louis and the Cardinals are synonymous. What other team and city can say that? Sometimes it is just as simple as that.”
It is not an understatement I and millions of fans love the Cardinals. If you ask any Cardinal fan they know the Royals “stole” the 1985 World Series and desire the Cubs to go another 200 years without a WSC.
Last week, I was getting my haircut at Jeremiah’s Place on Main Street. We both have such a love for the team that we talked about the 2021 season. Our conversation was so engrossing that after I walked outside, I realized I had forgotten to pay. I walked back in to pay, he also had forgotten. That is an example of love for the Cardinals.
Jesus was asked what is the greatest commandment (out of over 600)? He said, “Thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38This is the first and great commandment.” (Matthew 22:37-38b)
The love for God Jesus talked about is being consumed with the relationship, growing in your depth of knowledge about Him, and having a passion in your heart. Too many of us think of God as a religion and that causes us to focus on dos and don’ts instead of obeying the one that loves us.
Further, many times other loves (Cardinals, money, and other idols) are more important than God.
Today, think about how you would describe your relationship with God? Is it a religion that bores you or are you consumed with God?
1 John 4:19 19We love him, because he first loved us.
