Brief overview of the Bible

Thursday, April 22, 2021

Recently we visited my wife’s friend from college. They had just moved back from California to the St. Louis area (go Cards) and were able to buy a house.

Although they had not closed yet, they showed us pictures of the wonderful home.

I thought why not take this idea and re-introduce you to your Bible and give you a brief overview to better understand what is in the Greatest book ever written. Over forty authors wrote the Bible over 1400 years as they were moved by God. “Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” (2 Peter 1:20-21).

It has two main sections called the Old Testament (before Jesus) and the New Testament with a total of sixty six books or sections (39 in Old Testament and 27 in New Testament).

First, Genesis through Deuteronomy is called the book of the Law or Torah and was primarily written by Moses.

Joshua through Esther are the history books named for the story of the Jewish nation’s history.

Next, are the books of poetry from Job to Song of Solomon as it deals with various sayings (Proverbs), prayers, and other poetic literature.

Isaiah through Daniel is called the Major Prophets as they are larger than the next section’s work called the Minor Prophets.

After the Old Testament there was a “silent” period of 400 years where God did not give new revelation.

The New Testament begins with the Gospels (means good news) that focus on the life of Jesus as King (Matthew), servant (Mark), man (Luke), and God (John).

Next, is the book of Acts that deals with the actions and activities of the early church.

The rest of the New Testament is composed of mostly Epistles or letters with Revelation being the final book that gives prediction of the future tribulation and return of Jesus Christ.

All 66 books are the literal Word of God that reveals God, righteousness, and everything that we need to live for Him in this evil world.

Now that you have heard of the overview, will you use the Bible? Read the Bible every day as your spiritual food and guidance and get to know the God of the Universe.

Obviously make sure you have trusted Jesus Christ as your Savior and enjoy the relationship.
