Salty pie leads to spiritual principles

Thursday, May 6, 2021

Mother’s Day is Sunday and I hope all moms have a great day!

I love my mom and she is always is very supportive. I want to share one time when I know she regretted supporting me.

It was when I was in junior high and our church youth group was making and selling pies. Like a good momma, my mom made sure she bought the beautiful pecan pies I had prepared and baked.

There is a saying that says, “cooking is an art and baking is a science.” What that means is if a junior high boy is told by his middle school brain to add some things, it will not ruin the product. What it also means is baking always requires a person to use exact measurements. So in other words, when a pecan pie recipe calls for a pinch of salt it does not mean more than a pinch of salt unless middle school boy’s brain defines it.

For that brain, it means salt is always good so add more. As you can guess that is exactly what I did. Unfortunately, my mom was entertaining my grandma’s new boy friend (she was widowed) who would become her husband for the first time.

My mom decided what a great way to get to know Ross was to serve her lovely son’s pies for dessert. Ross had been in Foreign Service during WWII and had been around a lot of espionage and covert operation. When he tasted the pies, I think he no doubt believed we were possibly poisoning him. They were terribly salty and not very good.

Here is two spiritual principles you can learn from my pies. God has given a recipe for life in the Bible. The Bible will help anyone be more “perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” (2 Timothy 3:17)

When a person gets save by Christ Jesus and applies the Bible they see God change them and become more perfected and like Christ. What causes problems is when we add to the Bible because we don’t agree with it, don’t know it, any other reason, or false teachers.

In other words, make sure and study the complete Bible and avoid anything that would deviate from it. Like a good pie, we need to take time to enjoy the Holy Bible by applying it to our lives and getting to know God. Oh, and every since then I leave baking to the adults.
