Memorial Day: Part 3

Thursday, May 27, 2021

Monday is Memorial Day (May 31). America is a great country that everyone has freedoms you do not see in many of the places in the world. The reason we have these freedoms is because men and women served in the military and some even died.

Memorial Day is to remember those military service people who were killed in action (KIA). Missouri’s own President Truman designated part of the Memorial Day to be a day for peace.

President Truman proclaimed, “Accordingly, we feel the need of turning in humble suppliance to Almighty God for help and guidance. In recognition of this need, the Congress has fittingly provided, in a joint resolution which I approved on May 11, 1950, that Memorial Day, which has long been set aside for paying tribute to those who lost their lives in war, shall henceforth be dedicated also as a day for Nation-wide prayer for permanent peace.”(www.trumanlibrary.gov)

Peace is a good thing to pray for, but ultimately God will answer Presidents Truman’s proclamation through Jesus Christ who is the prince of peace. Further, even in this turbulent world we can have peace now through a relationship with Jesus Christ.

John 16:33- These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

For Memorial Day this year, consider a gift to Sikeston’s new war memorial. It was the idea of SIKESTON resident and Vietnam Veteran John Nettler who a M-60 Machine Gunner in an infantry unit. It will consist of 4 Granite Slabs and will contain the names of Killed in Action (KIA) from SIKESTON from World War I through Vietnam.

Fortunately we have no KIA’s from Desert Storm or Iraq/Afghanistan from SIKESTON. It will be located in SIKESTON VETERANS PARK.

Initial cost is $28,000 but with lighting, landscaping and service emblems total cost will be around $30,000. Anyone who would like to make a donation simply make their check payable to SIKESTON VETERANS PARK & mail to P O BOX 1001 SIKESTON 63801. SIKESTON VETERANS PARK is a 501 C 3 not for profit.
