Accept what God is planting

Friday, July 8, 2022

Have you ever noticed that toddlers make a lot more work, but sure are cute?

One of my earliest memories happened when I was about three on a hot June day. On my grandparents’ farm, we had two huge gardens, and, on that day, we were planting potatoes. We had gotten the potato seed ready by first quartering them up and putting them in a bucket. After my grandpa (with the team of horses) plowed up a very long row, my grandma went dropping two pieces about a few inches apart.

After taking a break she looked back to see all the potatoes she had left were gone. She looked up and down and then she spied the thief right behind her a little below her knees… ME! I had followed behind and picked up all the potatoes and put them in a bucket I was carrying.

I am sure I thought I was helping her pick up what I thought she had “dropped.”

I wonder how many of us sometimes pick up or hinder what we think is being dropped by God? The reality is we may not understand what God is planting, but the best way is to accept it, not resist, or try to fix.

Jesus said it beautifully before he went to the cross. Mark 14:36- “And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.”

It is important to see that God knows a lot more than we do and if we trust him, there will come a great harvest in our lives and world.

Galatians 6:9- “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”

Getting back to that day, my grandma sure did enjoy sharing that story for years. The good news is I reformed and never again stopped our family’s planting.

This Sunday during First Baptist Church, Dr. Braxton Hunter will be preaching (live virtually). He has debated world class atheists and other skeptics. Plan to attend at 6 p.m. (1101 N. Main St.).
